Chinese boxthorn (Lycium chinense) is a tough, easygoing deciduous shrub with long, slender, arching branches that may carry short spines. From summer into late autumn it produces small, pale purple, funnel-shaped flowers, followed by vivid red-orange berries that can hang on the plant for months. Gardeners love it for that “ornamental fruit display,” and it’s also widely grown for its edible berries in traditional uses. Give it sun and sharp drainage and it will handle a surprising amount of heat, cold, and drought—just don’t let its roots sit wet.
