Chinese arborvitae is a tough, evergreen conifer loved for its neat, fan-like sprays of scale leaves that stay green year-round. When young it naturally grows into a narrow, pyramidal little “Christmas-tree” shape, then broadens and rounds out with age. It carries both pollen cones and seed cones on the same plant; the seed cones start green and slightly fleshy, then mature to a reddish-brown and open to release seeds. Because it tolerates sun, wind, and many soil types, it’s widely planted in gardens and parks, shaped into hedges and windbreaks, and used in reforestation on sunny slopes. Its wood has also been used traditionally for construction and furniture.

Scientific Name Platycladus orientalis
Family / Genus Cupressaceae / Platycladus
Origin Endemic to China and widely distributed across much of the country (reported as absent from Qinghai and Xinjiang). It has also been widely planted and naturalized in many temperate regions outside China.
Aliases Biota, Chinese Thuja, Oriental Arborvitae
