Chinaberry tree (Melia azedarach) is a fast-growing, deciduous shade tree loved for its light, feathery foliage and its spring show of pale lilac flowers. After blooming, it sets round berries that ripen to yellow and often hang on the branches well into winter, giving the tree a second season of interest. It’s widely planted along streets and in parks for quick shade and toughness, and its wood is often noted for being relatively insect-resistant. Do admire the berries—but don’t taste them: the fruits and other parts are poisonous if eaten.
