Champion’s Wood Fern

Bedroom Family & Genus Ferns
admin March 25, 2026 5 min read

Champion's wood fern (Dryopteris championii) is a clump-forming, perennial woodland fern loved for its elegant, finely divided fronds and the bold, easy-to-spot spore clusters on the undersides of its leaflets. In nature it settles into cool, humid, shaded mountain woodlands—exactly the kind of calm, dappled understory setting many gardeners try to recreate. It’s mainly grown as an ornamental foliage plant, and its rhizome has also been used traditionally in some regions (though it’s not something to experiment with at home).

Scientific Name Dryopteris championii
Family / Genus Dryopteridaceae / Dryopteris
Origin Native to China; recorded from provinces including Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Xizang (Tibet), and also Hong Kong. Typically grows on shaded, moist mountain slopes in open woodland understories or among shrubs.
