Chamomile is a sweetly scented, daisy-like herb famous for its sunny yellow centers and delicate white petals—give it a sniff and you’ll understand its classic “apple-like” perfume (the old Greek nickname translates to “ground apple”). Gardeners usually mean one of two close relatives: German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), a taller annual grown heavily for tea and essential oil, or Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), a low, creeping perennial often used as fragrant groundcover. Beyond its charm, chamomile has a long tradition as a soothing household herb, and many growers also love it as a friendly companion plant in the garden.
