Chameleon plant (Houttuynia cordata) is a tough, moisture-loving perennial groundcover with soft, heart-shaped leaves—often showing a purple-red flush underneath—and a famously “fishy” scent when the foliage is crushed. It’s happiest in wet, boggy places, where it spreads quickly by underground rhizomes to form broad, dense patches. Gardeners grow it for lush coverage in damp areas, while in parts of Asia it’s also valued as a traditional herb and an edible, strongly flavored greens/seasoning (always use with confident identification and local food guidance).

Scientific Name Houttuynia cordata
Family / Genus Saururaceae / Houttuynia
Origin Native to central, southeastern, and southwestern China; typically found along ditches and streams, and in wet ground under open woodland.
Aliases Dokudami, Fish Mint, Fishwort, Heartleaf Houttuynia
