Chamberbitter (Phyllanthus urinaria) is a small annual herb that looks delicate up close but grows with real confidence in warm, humid places. It has purplish-red, longitudinally ridged stems and neat, tiny leaves arranged along slender branchlets, creating a fern-like, “mini pinnate” look. Its minute whitish flowers form along the undersides of these leafy sprays, and later the plant sets flattened, round seed capsules that line up beneath the foliage—like little pearls tucked under the leaves (which is exactly what its Chinese name hints at).

Scientific Name Phyllanthus urinaria
Family / Genus Phyllanthaceae / Phyllanthus
Origin Found across eastern, central, southern, and southwestern China. Typically grows in montane shrubland and under open, sparse woodland.
Aliases Gripeweed, Red Stem Chamberbitter
