Catnip is a lively, mint-family perennial famous for the blissed-out (and often hilarious) reaction it triggers in many cats. It grows as a clump of upright, branching, square stems with a soft, slightly fuzzy look, and carries gray‑green, toothed leaves that release a minty, lightly lemony fragrance when touched. From late spring into fall, it sends up slender spikes of small white blooms flushed or speckled with pale purple—pretty to people, irresistible to pollinators, and a classic “cat garden” favorite. It’s also valued as a simple herbal tea plant and a naturally resilient, easygoing garden herb.

Scientific Name Nepeta cataria L.
Family / Genus Lamiaceae / Nepeta
Origin Native to Europe, Southwestern and Central Asia, and North Africa. Widely naturalized in North America and other temperate regions
