Camellia (Camellia japonica) is a classic evergreen shrub loved for its glossy, deep-green leaves and big, rose-like blooms that light up the quieter months—often from winter into early spring. With thousands of cultivars, flowers can be single, semi-double, or fully double in shades of red, pink, white, and bicolors. It’s also a popular festive potted plant around New Year and Lunar New Year. The main “secret” to happy camellias is steady, gentle care: acidic soil, bright filtered light, even moisture (never soggy), and protection from hot sun and sudden temperature swings—especially while buds are forming.
