Callery pear is a tough, adaptable deciduous pear tree prized more for its spring show than for its fruit. It forms sturdy branches and carries broad, egg-shaped leaves that turn out smooth and clean-looking (generally hairless) with gently serrated edges. In spring it bursts into clusters of small white pear blossoms, and later sets small, round fruits toward late summer. It’s famously flexible about soil—handling poor, even alkaline ground—and once its deep roots are established, it can ride out dry spells better than many other pears. Gardeners and orchardists have also long valued it as a reliable rootstock for grafting cultivated pears.

Scientific Name Pyrus calleryana
Family / Genus Rosaceae / Pyrus
Origin Native to eastern and southern China, extending to Vietnam. It occurs wild on warm, humid slopes, in wetlands, and in mixed woodland; several infraspecific variants have been reported.
