Calla lily is loved for its sleek, sculptural “funnel” blooms—though what looks like a petal is actually a spathe (a modified leaf) wrapped around a central spadix of tiny true flowers. The classic form is usually white and can do beautifully outdoors in mild climates, while many modern, compact hybrids come in a rainbow of colors (and often have speckled leaves), making them popular as potted plants and long-lasting cut flowers. After flowering, the foliage often yellows and dies back as the plant heads into a natural rest (dormancy).

Scientific Name Zantedeschia aethiopica
Family / Genus Araceae / Zantedeschia
Origin Southern Africa (notably South Africa and Lesotho; also cited as South Africa and Eswatini). Widely cultivated elsewhere.
Aliases Arum Lily, Lily Of The Nile, White Calla Lily
