Bromeliads are bold, tropical-looking houseplants loved for their sculptural rosettes of arching leaves and their long-lasting splash of color. What most people call the “flower” is usually a set of vivid bracts—often red, orange, pink, or yellow—that can stay attractive for weeks to months, while the true flowers are smaller and appear from within. Many popular types have slightly toothed or spiny leaf edges, and a lot of them are naturally epiphytic, meaning they often grow perched on trees in the wild (without stealing from the host). Indoors, they’re generally easygoing as long as they get bright filtered light, warmth, and a very well-draining mix.
