Box-leaved holly (Ilex crenata var. convexa) is a neat, evergreen holly prized for its tiny, glossy leaves with a gently domed, subtly bumpy surface—an effect that can look a bit like tortoiseshell. It naturally forms a dense, fine-textured shrub and takes clipping beautifully, which is why it’s a favorite for crisp hedges, edging, low mass plantings, and shaped accents in courtyards and urban landscapes. In late spring it produces small white flowers, followed by small round berries that typically mature to black.
