Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) is a tough, adaptable annual herb that often pops up as a common volunteer along roadsides, field edges, and other disturbed spots—especially where there’s a bit of shade. In summer it produces clusters of tiny, white, star-like flowers, followed by neat, bead-like round berries that ripen to a deep purple-black. While many people think of it as a “weed,” it can actually be quite charming in a pot if you enjoy delicate flowers and ornamental fruit—just be mindful that parts of the plant can be toxic if eaten.

Scientific Name Solanum nigrum
Family / Genus Solanaceae / Solanum
Origin Widely distributed across much of China; commonly found in shaded hillsides and valleys, as well as along roadsides.
Aliases European Black Nightshade, Garden Nightshade
