Black Locust

Autumn Family & Genus Fast Growing

Black locust is a fast-growing deciduous tree loved for its airy, pinnate leaves and its spring display of drooping, pea-like flower clusters—usually white, sweetly fragrant, and buzzing with bees. In summer it sets narrow, pod-like fruits, and underground it’s just as energetic: it resprouts strongly from buds and often sends up root suckers. Its wood is famously hard and rot-resistant (great for outdoor use), but the branches can be a bit brittle in strong winds, so it’s happiest in a more sheltered spot.
