Billygoat-Weed

Autumn Fast Growing Flowering Plants
admin March 25, 2026 5 min read

Billygoat-weed (Ageratum conyzoides) is a quick, warm-season annual in the daisy family that’s loved (and sometimes cursed) for how fast it grows. It forms bushy clumps of soft green foliage topped with fluffy, lilac-to-lavender flower clusters that keep coming through summer and into autumn—sometimes even year-round where frost never arrives. In flower beds and containers it’s great for filling gaps with a haze of color, but in warm regions it can self-seed enthusiastically and behave more like a weed than a polite garden guest.

Scientific Name Ageratum conyzoides
Family / Genus Asteraceae / Ageratum
Origin Native to Mexico and adjacent regions. In China it is cultivated and has also escaped from cultivation in areas including Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Heilongjiang. It is found in valleys, woodland slopes and edges, riverbanks, grassy hillsides, field margins, and disturbed ground.
Aliases Chick Weed, Goatweed, Tropical Whiteweed
