Belgian azalea is the classic “florist azalea” you see packed with buds in winter and early spring—a compact, evergreen little shrub grown mainly as a potted showpiece. Its glossy green foliage sets off dense clusters of funnel-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and bicolors. It’s happiest in bright light, cool-to-mild temperatures, and an airy spot with steady moisture in an acidic, well-drained mix. The trick is balance: don’t let it dry out, but never let it sit soggy. If you keep it cool, humid, and away from heaters, it can reward you with a long bloom season—and in good conditions some plants rebloom more than once a year.
