Beale’s Mahonia

Autumn Family & Genus Flowering Ornamentals
Oasislink Garden & Outdoor Team March 24, 2026 4 min read

Beale's mahonia is a bold, evergreen shrub with a naturally upright, clump-forming shape and striking, holly-like leaves edged with small spines. It really shines in the cool season—sending up sweetly fragrant, bright yellow flower spikes from fall into winter—followed by decorative, grape-like blue to blue-black berries with a soft waxy bloom. Because it keeps its structure year-round and tolerates some shade, it’s a favorite for courtyards, parks, mixed borders, under open-canopy trees, and even large containers where it can be trained in a bonsai-inspired style.

Scientific Name Mahonia bealei
Family / Genus Berberidaceae / Mahonia
Origin China (widely distributed across many regions); widely cultivated and naturalized in some areas outside its native range.
Aliases Beale's Barberry, Chinese Mahonia, Leatherleaf Mahonia
