Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli var. mitis) is a warm-season annual grass that forms sturdy, upright clumps with smooth, hairless leaf sheaths that loosely wrap the stem. In early to mid-summer it sends up upright, pyramid-like panicles; the tiny flowers are subtle, and the real show is the architectural seedhead that follows into mid- to late summer. It naturally loves damp, disturbed ground—think field edges, ditches, gardens, and roadsides—and can create a breezy “wild meadow” look in summer and autumn. That said, it’s also famous for being an extremely vigorous agricultural weed, so it’s a plant to admire with a little caution.

Scientific Name Echinochloa crus-galli var. mitis
Family / Genus Poaceae / Echinochloa
Origin Widespread across warm regions worldwide; commonly found in moist places such as fields, vegetable plots/gardens, and along roadsides.
