Asparagus Fern

Air Purifying Autumn Bedroom
admin March 24, 2026 20 min read

Asparagus fern (文竹) is a graceful evergreen plant loved for its airy, lace-like green “fronds.” Although it looks like a fern, it’s actually an Asparagus relative—those soft needles are leaf-like stems (cladodes), not true fern leaves. Indoors it makes an elegant tabletop plant or hanging basket specimen, staying lush when given bright filtered light, steady moisture (never soggy soil), and a bit of humidity.

Scientific Name Asparagus setaceus (Kunth) Jessop
Family / Genus Asparagaceae / Asparagus
Origin Southern Africa to eastern/southern Africa (especially South Africa; also recorded from Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini/Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe).
Aliases Climbing Asparagus, Climbing Asparagus Fern, Common Asparagus Fern, Ferny Asparagus, Lace Fern, Plume Asparagus, Plumosa Fern
