Gland willow (Salix chaenomeloides) is a fast-growing, deciduous willow that loves wet feet and open skies. It naturally belongs on river edges and low, soggy ground—where it leafs out in spring and produces pale green catkins. After flowering, small capsules ripen and burst to release seeds wrapped in silky white “willow fluff,” letting the wind carry them to new wet places. Gardeners and restoration crews value it for stabilizing watersides, greening wetlands, and feeding pollinators early in the season; people have also traditionally used its wood, bark, and fibers for practical crafts.

Scientific Name Salix chaenomeloides
Family / Genus Salicaceae / Salix
Origin Native to eastern China (including Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang) and Taiwan. Typically grows along riverbanks, stream edges, sandbars, and other low-elevation wet places.
