Chinese violet cress is a cheerful, tough little cool-season plant in the mustard family that wakes up early—often greening up when much of the garden is still sleepy. It forms low, leafy clumps that work beautifully as a groundcover, then sends up upright stems with four-petaled flowers in violet-purple to pinkish tones (often paling toward white as they age). It’s an easy, adaptable choice for natural-looking drifts, borders, and bright shade under trees, and it can provide a surprisingly long season of green from autumn into late spring in many climates.

Scientific Name Orychophragmus violaceus
Family / Genus Brassicaceae / Orychophragmus
Origin China (widely naturalized and cultivated as an ornamental groundcover in parts of East Asia).
Aliases February Blue, Chinese Violet, Two-Month Blue, Violet Cress
