Viola japonica (Japanese violet) is a sweet, low-growing perennial that naturally settles into tidy clumps and small spreading patches. In late spring into summer it pops up soft, pale lavender blooms above a base of attractive heart-shaped leaves, making it an easygoing, woodland-style groundcover for lightly shaded gardens and streamside-inspired plantings.
