Four o'clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa) is a beloved old-fashioned garden plant grown for its sweetly fragrant, brightly colored blooms that pop open in the late afternoon and fade by the next morning. It forms a bushy, well-branched clump and is famous for its playful color surprises—flowers may be red, pink, yellow, orange, or white, sometimes striped, speckled, or even showing different colors on the same plant. In warm climates it behaves like a tender perennial, while in colder regions it’s usually grown as a fast, easy annual.
