Chinese wingnut is a handsome, tall deciduous shade tree in the walnut family. Plant lovers often notice its big, feathery pinnate leaves—especially the distinctive “winged” leaf axis (rachis)—and its dramatic, long, drooping clusters of winged nuts that hang like green tassels before ripening. It’s a popular choice for parks, streets, courtyards, and waterside plantings because it copes remarkably well with wet or periodically flooded soils, while still growing into a broad-crowned, stately tree when given room.
