Common sowthistle is one of those “everywhere” wild plants you start noticing once you know it—an easygoing annual to short-lived biennial herb that pops up along roadsides, field edges, lawns, and other disturbed ground. It sends up upright, branching stems topped with cheerful, dandelion-like yellow flower heads, then happily self-seeds to create a relaxed, meadowy feel (or a nuisance, depending on your point of view!). In many regions it’s also valued as a foraged leafy green when young and tender, and it can be used as green fodder for livestock.

Scientific Name Sonchus oleraceus
Family / Genus Asteraceae / Sonchus
Origin Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia; now widespread and naturalized worldwide, including across China.
Aliases Annual Sowthistle, Smooth Sowthistle, Soft Sowthistle
