Japanese clematis (Clematis patens) is a perennial, herbaceous climbing vine loved for its big, showy blooms and elegant, silky seedheads. It climbs by twining and makes a beautiful vertical accent on trellises, fences, pergolas, and garden walls—plus it can do surprisingly well in a deep container. Look for its cylindrical stems with noticeable lengthwise ridges, pinnate leaves usually made of three leaflets, and fruits that mature into decorative achenes with long, golden-silky hairs.

Scientific Name Clematis patens
Family / Genus Ranunculaceae / Clematis
Origin Eastern Shandong and eastern Liaoning, China; found in shrubland on hillsides and among scrub.
