Red spider lily is a perennial bulb best loved for its electric scarlet “spider” blooms—narrow petals curl sharply backward while long stamens reach out like whiskers. One of its coolest quirks is timing: the flowers rise on leafless stems in late summer to early fall, and only after the show do the strap-like green leaves appear in autumn to feed the bulb for next year. It’s often planted in sweeping drifts along paths, borders, and under deciduous trees, where it brings a sudden, dramatic burst of color.
