Delavay’s Rhododendron

Flowering Plants Garden / Outdoor Bed Low Light
Oasislink Garden & Outdoor Team March 25, 2026 5 min read

Delavay's rhododendron is a handsome evergreen that can grow as a dense shrub or develop into a small, tree-like plant with subtly peeling bark. It’s loved for its bold, tightly packed clusters of vivid blooms in spring—often putting on a true mountain-garden show. In nature it comes from cool, moist upland habitats, so it’s happiest where summers aren’t scorching or bone-dry, and where the soil stays acidic, humus-rich, and evenly moist without becoming soggy.

Scientific Name Rhododendron delavayi
Family / Genus Ericaceae / Rhododendron
Origin Native to southwestern China, recorded from northwest Guangxi, southwest Sichuan, western Guizhou, throughout Yunnan, and southern Tibet. Typically grows in evergreen broadleaf forests and shrub thickets.
Aliases Delavay Rhododendron, Delavayi Rhododendron
