American Pokeweed

Autumn Family & Genus Fast Growing
Oasislink Garden & Outdoor Team March 25, 2026 4 min read

American pokeweed is a bold, fast-growing perennial herb best known for its big, soft leaves and its long, wand-like clusters of tiny whitish flowers that may blush pink. By late summer into autumn, those flower spikes turn into heavy, drooping bunches of glossy deep purple-black berries. It rises each year from a thick, fleshy taproot and can self-seed readily, so it’s as resilient as it is eye-catching—though it must be treated with care because all parts are poisonous.

Scientific Name Phytolacca americana
Family / Genus Phytolaccaceae / Phytolacca
Origin Native to eastern North America; widely introduced and naturalized in many parts of the world, and cultivated across much of China.
