Tropical kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides) is a fast-growing, herbaceous twining vine in the pea (legume) family, loved—and sometimes feared—for how quickly it can blanket bare ground. Its classic three-part (trifoliate) leaves make a dense, leafy cover, and it produces pea-like flowers in clusters (racemes), followed by typical bean-like pods. Because it’s tough, vigorous, and tolerant of poor soils, it’s widely used as a living groundcover for erosion control, land restoration, and as a cover crop/green manure. In some places it’s also valued for its abundant biomass as fodder, and its roots are known to be starchy.

Scientific Name Pueraria phaseoloides
Family / Genus Fabaceae / Pueraria
Origin Recorded in southern China (including Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and Zhejiang), typically growing in shrubland on hills and mountains.
Aliases Phasey Bean, Wild Kudzu
