Indian pokeweed is a tough, vigorous perennial herb best known for its thick, fleshy root and its dramatic seasonal display: leafy upright stems in spring and summer, dense upright spikes of tiny white flowers, and then clusters of glossy black berries. It’s adaptable to many soils and can be quite hardy once established, but it strongly dislikes waterlogged ground. In cold seasons, the top growth naturally dies back, while the sturdy root overwinters and shoots again when spring returns.

Scientific Name Phytolacca acinosa
Family / Genus Phytolaccaceae / Phytolacca
Origin Native across much of China (from the southwest to the northeast) and also found in Korea, Japan, and parts of the Indian subcontinent. It is vigorous and often grows wild at woodland edges, foothills, roadsides, and around homes, from lowlands to hills and mountains.
Aliases Asian Pokeweed, Himalayan Pokeweed
