Mock strawberry is a cheerful little woodland creeper that hugs the ground and spreads by long runners, quickly knitting itself into a soft, slightly fuzzy green mat. It’s loved for its tiny yellow flowers and bright red, strawberry-like fruits. The fruits look tempting, but they’re mostly ornamental and usually quite bland—think “cute garden decoration” more than “snack.” It’s a great choice for filling shaded spots with reliably moist soil, even in areas that get a bit of light foot traffic.

Scientific Name Duchesnea indica
Family / Genus Rosaceae / Duchesnea
Origin Native across much of China (recorded from areas south of Liaoning), commonly found in shady, moist woodland habitats.
Aliases False Strawberry, Indian Mock Strawberry, Snake Strawberry
