Chinese willow (Salix matsudana) is a fast-growing, deciduous willow tree loved for its airy, graceful crown and impressive wind tolerance. In early spring, it produces catkins as the leaves begin to unfold—an especially welcome nectar source for pollinators when the season is just getting started. Because it establishes quickly and is easy to propagate, it’s widely planted along roadsides, in parks and lawns, and on riverbanks or ditches where moisture is dependable.

Scientific Name Salix matsudana
Family / Genus Salicaceae / Salix
Origin Native to China; widely distributed from Northeast China and the North China Plain across the Loess Plateau of Northwest China, west to Gansu and Qinghai, and south to the Huai River basin and the lower Yangtze region (including Jiangsu and Zhejiang). Common in lowland plains.
