Chinese asparagus fern

Autumn Fast Growing Flowering Plants
March 25, 2026

Chinese asparagus fern is a tough, perennial Asparagus relative that grows as a branching climber or trailer—easy to train on a small trellis or let spill from a hanging basket. What look like “leaves” are actually flattened, sickle-shaped cladodes (leaf-like stems) that sit in small clusters, while the true leaves are reduced to tiny scales. The stem bases can be a bit prickly. In late spring it makes small, subtle flowers, followed later by eye-catching bright red berries.

Family / Genus Asparagaceae / Asparagus
