Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) is a tough, fast-growing deciduous shade tree that naturally forms a broad, rounded crown. It’s famous for bouncing back after cutting (strong resprouting) and for taking heavy pruning without complaint—so it can be grown as anything from a big street tree to a tightly clipped hedge or windbreak. It’s notably cold-hardy and will tolerate alkaline or moderately salty soils, making it a reliable choice for difficult sites—just don’t plant it where the ground stays soggy or poorly drained.

Family / Genus Ulmaceae / Ulmus
Origin Native across northern China (including Northeast, North, Northwest, and East China). Typically found on hillsides, in valleys, on plains, low hills, and sandy ridges.
