Branched Horsetail

Family & Genus Fast Growing Ferns
admin March 25, 2026 5 min read

Branched horsetail is a tough, perennial “living fossil” that looks like a miniature green bamboo or a bundle of drinking straws. Instead of leafy blades, it grows upright, jointed grey‑green stems with tiny sheath-like scales at each node—its true leaves are basically reduced to little collars. Run your fingers along the stems and you’ll feel the signature roughness caused by silica and ridged texture. It doesn’t bloom; it reproduces the old-fashioned way, by spores formed in compact cone-like tips on fertile stems.

Scientific Name Equisetum ramosissimum
Family / Genus Equisetaceae / Equisetum
Origin Widely distributed across Eurasia (native range varies by region); typically found in wet places such as stream sides and damp sandy ground.
