Chinese Lizard’s Tail

Autumn Fast Growing Flowering Plants
Oasislink Garden & Outdoor Team March 25, 2026 12 min read

Chinese lizard's tail (三白草) is a moisture-loving perennial that feels right at home in wet gardens, bog beds, and along pond edges. It’s prized for its slender white flower spikes and, later, its quirky near-spherical fruits that look slightly bumpy or “warty.” The leaves are papery, neatly veined, and some plants produce a few creamy-white leaves—an eye-catching trait that inspired the name “three whites.” If you can keep its roots consistently wet, it’s an easygoing, subtly beautiful plant for naturalistic waterside planting.

Scientific Name Saururus chinensis
Family / Genus Saururaceae / Saururus
Origin Native to China, recorded from northern and central provinces (including Hebei, Shandong, and Henan) south through the Yangtze River basin and beyond. It naturally grows and is commonly cultivated along pond margins, ditches, and streams in shallow water or other low-lying, wet ground.
