Japanese maple is a beloved small deciduous tree grown for its graceful, often umbrella-like canopy and its hand-shaped leaves that put on a beautiful seasonal show—fresh and delicate in spring, lush in summer, and famously vivid in autumn. In spring it produces small purplish flowers, followed by the classic paired winged “helicopter” seeds (samaras) that mature from late summer into early autumn. It’s happiest in humus-rich, evenly moist but well-drained soil, with some shelter from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds, and it strongly dislikes waterlogged ground.
