Chinese torreya (Torreya grandis) is a long-lived, evergreen coniferous tree prized for both beauty and usefulness. It typically grows with a straight trunk and a neat oval crown, and most trees are dioecious—meaning male and female cones occur on separate plants. When mature, its large seeds sit inside a fleshy aril that turns a plum-to-purplish red and often looks lightly “powdered” with a waxy bloom. In parts of China, the kernel inside the seed is cherished as an edible nut, giving this stately tree a special place in gardens, orchards, and local food culture.

Scientific Name Torreya grandis
Family / Genus Taxaceae / Torreya
Origin Endemic to China; recorded from provinces including Jiangsu, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Liaoning, and Shandong. Typically grows in warm, rainy regions on yellow soils, red soils, and yellow-brown soils, often in deep, well-developed valley soils with woodland cover.
Aliases Chinese Nutmeg Yew, Grand Torreya, Torreya
