London plane is a big, fast-growing deciduous shade tree best known for its striking “camouflage” trunk—its bark peels away in plates to reveal fresh, paler patches underneath. Tough as nails in cities, it shrugs off pollution, copes with a wide range of soils, and responds well to pruning, which is why it’s one of the world’s classic boulevard and park trees.

Scientific Name Platanus × acerifolia
Family / Genus Platanaceae / Platanus
Origin A hybrid of cultivated origin, first arising in Europe (widely associated with the UK and Western Europe). Now planted worldwide as a street and shade tree; widely cultivated across many regions of China.
Aliases English Plane, Hybrid Plane, London Plane Tree, Plane Tree
