Common reed (Phragmites australis) is a tall, upright wetland grass that loves life at the water’s edge. It spreads by strong, creeping rhizomes and can quickly knit itself into broad, dense stands—great for a natural screen or a wildlife-friendly shoreline. In season it tops its stems with big, feathery plumes that often arch slightly, creating dramatic, soft-looking bands along ponds and rivers.
