Lessing's feather grass (Stipa lessingiana) is a fine-textured, tuft-forming perennial bunchgrass loved for its airy, slim flower panicles and narrow, needle-like leaves. Naturally built for open steppe conditions, it develops tough, fibrous roots and handles lean, rocky soils with ease. From May to July it sends up pale yellowish, grass-toned spikelets that add a soft, shimmering look in sun and breeze. In addition to being a graceful ornamental for naturalistic gardens, it’s also respected as a high-quality forage grass in its native rangelands.
