Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis) is a nut-bearing, deciduous tree native to eastern China, best known for its rich, flavorful nuts. In the right spot it matures into a handsome medium-to-large shade tree—typically 10–20 m (33–66 ft) tall—with elegant pinnate leaves and spring catkins. Come autumn, it produces hard-shelled nuts that are eaten as a snack and also pressed for a fragrant edible oil. Plant lovers often recognize it by its 5–7 finely serrated leaflets and the distinctive orange-yellow, glandular coating on young twigs and immature fruits; young fruits can show narrow wing-like ribs that fade as they ripen.
