Common water-plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) is a cheerful, clump-forming perennial that lives right on the edge between land and water. It starts with a rosette of leaves at the base (leaf shapes change depending on whether they’re underwater or above it), then sends up airy, branching flower stems sprinkled with tiny three-petaled blooms—usually white, sometimes with a blush of pink or lilac. It’s a classic choice for pond margins and other constantly wet spots, and it also has a long history of traditional herbal use involving its small tuber (best left to trained professionals).

Scientific Name Alisma plantago-aquatica
Family / Genus Alismataceae / Alisma
Origin Recorded in northeastern China (including Heilongjiang and Jilin). It naturally grows in shallow water along lakes, river backwaters, streams, and pond margins, and is also found in marshes, ditches, and low-lying wetlands.
Aliases European Water-Plantain, Water-Plantain
