Japanese distylium (Distylium racemosum) is a sturdy evergreen shrub to small tree loved for its thick, leathery, glossy leaves and “always tidy” look. It’s a surprisingly adaptable landscape plant—happy in sun or partial shade, tolerant of many soils, and dependable in warm, humid climates (while still handling a fair bit of cold). Its spring flowers are tiny and subtle, so the real show is the dense crown, strong structure, and slightly zig-zag twigs that give it character. Gardeners often use it for hedges, screens, and mass plantings, and it can also be trained in containers or as bonsai.
