Creeping lilyturf (Liriope spicata) is a tough, evergreen (in mild climates), grass-like perennial that’s beloved for one main superpower: it turns tricky, shady spaces into a neat green carpet. It spreads by short underground stems (rhizomes), forming dense clumps and mats that work beautifully as edging, under-tree planting, and low-maintenance groundcover. In late spring to midsummer it sends up slim spikes of tiny lavender-to-purple flowers, followed later by small, dark, bead-like berries. A fun botanical detail: its roots often swell into small fleshy, tuber-like bumps near the tips.

Scientific Name Liriope spicata
Family / Genus Asparagaceae / Liriope
Origin East Asia (commonly recorded from China and nearby regions); naturally found in woodland edges, valleys, slopes, roadsides, and moist places.
Aliases Creeping Liriope, Creeping Monkey Grass, Lilyturf, Spiked Lilyturf
