Chinese sumac (Rhus chinensis) is a fast-growing, often short-lived deciduous shrub or small tree with a rounded, spreading crown. It carries elegant, feathery-looking pinnate leaves (usually 7–13 leaflets) and, in midsummer, produces airy terminal clusters of tiny creamy-white flowers. By autumn it’s at its best: the foliage can blaze vivid red, and the plant holds fuzzy red fruits that add extra texture and color—making it a favorite for sunny woodland edges, parks, and naturalistic, “wild” garden plantings.

Scientific Name Rhus chinensis
Family / Genus Anacardiaceae / Rhus
Origin Widely distributed across much of China (from Liaoning in the north, west to Sichuan and Gansu, and south to Hainan).
Aliases Chinese Gall Tree, Nutgall Tree
