Eastern redbud is a charming deciduous small tree (sometimes a large, multi-stemmed shrub) best loved for its early spring surprise: rosy-pink to purplish flowers that pop out in clusters on bare branches—sometimes even right on older wood and the trunk—before the leaves appear. After flowering, it unfolds heart-shaped leaves (with some cultivars showing rich burgundy-purple tones), and later forms flat, bean-like seed pods that can linger into winter, giving the plant interest well beyond bloom season.

Scientific Name Cercis canadensis
Family / Genus Fabaceae / Cercis
Origin Native to eastern and central North America (including parts of the United States and Mexico). Widely cultivated as an ornamental, including in northern China.
