Penstemon is a cheerful, clump-forming flowering plant best known for its bright, tubular “bell” blooms and long summer performance. This species forms upright, softly hairy stems with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that feel a bit velvety to the touch. The flowers—often in vivid reds, purples, and whites—appear along the upper stems in airy spikes or loose clusters, making it a favorite for borders, mixed beds, and pots. Although naturally a perennial, it’s frequently grown as an annual in gardens, especially where winters are too cold or soils stay wet.
